Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Residential & Commuter Life, Area Directors promote student learning and success while working collaboratively with other campus departments to maximize the impact of the residential experience. Responsibilities include providing overall administration of their assigned areas, including enforcement of University regulations/policies, staff development, educational programming, conflict resolution, and administrative/facilities management.

Capital University is a small, private University in Columbus, OH, with approximately 1300 residential students. The Office of Residential & Commuter Life consists of the Director, Associate Director, three Area Directors, and Resident Assistants.

Primary roles and responsibilities:

  • Responsible for day-to-day administration of residential area, including opening and closing of the residence halls.
  • Provide personal and academic support to residential students and serve as a Student Success mentor.
  • Train, supervise, support and evaluate one Senior Resident Assistant and a staff of 9-15 Resident Assistants.
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of staff selection, training, and on-going development.
  • Manage building occupancy, roommate changes, keys, and room condition reporting.
  • Maintain the physical needs of the building in collaboration with facilities management and housekeeping staff.
  • Adjudicate residence hall level student conduct incidents and implement educational sanctions for violations.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation to provide leadership during emergency or crisis situations in cooperation with Public Safety.
  • Opportunity to participate in division and/or university wide committees, supervise student organizations, and gain experience in functional areas outside of Residence Life.
  • Area Director will have a focus area in one major functional area of ORCL (Housing Operations, Residential Life, Commuter Life) and have opportunity to lead or assist with departmental processes


  • Master's degree preferred in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Educational Administration, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Excellent skills in using Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Access, Excel, and Outlook. Familiarity with or ability to learn, Maxient, Simple Campus Housing, E-RezLife, and Datatel Colleague.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations.
  • Excellent professional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Required to live in one of the University owned residence halls

The Area Director position is a 12-month live-in position that includes a furnished apartment and full board plan during the Academic Year.
